What To Do Before You Call

#1 - Check Your Thermostat

The easiest thing to check before you call for help, is your thermostat. Your thermostat display can give you a clue as to what is going on with your heater. It may tell you that the system is resetting itself. It may tell you that the thermostat battery is low. The thermostat display may just be flashing, which could indicate bigger problems. If you don’t understand the message displayed, give us a call and describe it to us.

#2 - Check Your Filter

A dirty filter can wreak havoc on your system. When your filter gets dirty, it reduces airflow which leads to your furnace running longer to heat your home. There are plenty of safety devices in your furnace that help prevent it from over heating. Low airflow, caused by a dirty filter, can cause the flames to shut off to protect the unit. Your blower will still run, and that is when you will feel cold air coming out of the vents. If you heater is blowing cold air, change your filter and see if that resolves the problem. If it doesn’t, it’s time to give TMC Heating & Cooling a call.

#3 - Check Your Breaker (Heat Pump Systems)

#4 - Check Your Fuses

On some furnaces you’ll have what’s called an SSU Switch. This switch has a round buss fuse that can go out for the same reasons a breaker gets tripped. The top two reasons are; being overworked, and getting overloaded. This fuse can be checked and changed very easily, once you have turned off the power to the unit. If you see any black in the middle of the fuse, the fuse is bad and needs to be replaced. Verify the amperage on the front of the fuse. You should be able to pick up a replacement fuse at your local hardware store. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this yourself, TMC Heating & Cooling is here to help.
